During the French Revolution, Lady Charlotte is on a quest for revenge, hunting down the ravenous cannibal, Tarrare, whose hunger can never be sated. Aided by her ex-lover, Zélie, Charlotte’s dangerous mission takes her on a dangerous trip through the seedy underworld of revolutionary Paris.

Marguerite Bennett’s tale of sex, hunger and horror is hugely engrossing, though this opening issue is a little confusing due to the way the narrative jumps back and forth in time. Artist Helena Masellis provides some jaw-dropping work, with one incredible sequence literally snaking across a double page spread.

The erotic sequences are beautiful and tastefully done; it’s worth noting that the comic is created by an all-female team, so it doesn’t feel leery, and the bodies on display don’t feel unrealistic in the ways you often see when the creation comes from the perspective of the male gaze.

The horror is pretty unnerving too, made even more so when you discover that Tarrare was a real person, and his hunger as depicted here bears more relation to the real story than you could possibly imagine.

This first issue feels pretty unique; both alluring and repulsive at different times, Gastronomique has its teeth in me already.
