Just in time to celebrate the 40th anniversary of the original Bubble Bobble arcade game, the roguelike Bubble Bobble Sugar Dungeons has received an update to give fans a lot more bubble blowing action.

The Boosted update brings a genuinely impressive number of additions and changes to Bubble Bobble Sugar Dungeons, which it desperately needed.

Here’s what the update adds, according to Taito:

  • Bonus Stages: You can now enter your brother Bob’s room, and he’ll give you a choice of rooms you can tackle as the next stage of your adventure.
  • Item Room: You can now pick up items on your way through the game, with new chests and items appearing randomly for you to use on your journey.
  • Chack’n Cake: An item which also appeared in the original Bubble Bobble from 1986, the Chack’n Cake gives you invincibility in the room you use it in.
  • x2 Gummy: This allows you to double the number of materials you collect on your current delve through the Sugar Dungeons.
  • Gold Sugarees: With the x2 Gummy doubling materials you collect, the Gold Sugarees does the same for, yes, Sugarees!
  • Combo Room: This room gives you the opportunity to defeat several enemies at once, which in turn restores the Baron Timer. That’ll delay how long it takes for the scarily invincible Baron Von Bubba to show up.

It’s definitely good to see such an extensive update made available, and though the argument could be made that this content should have been in the underwhelming Bubble Bobble Sugar Dungeons from the beginning, at least Taito have worked to improve the game for no extra cost to fans.

Bubble Bobble Sugar Dungeons: Boosted is available now on PS5, Steam, Switch and Switch 2.
