In the third issue of Fortune, a jailbreak is on the cards. If only one of our ‘heroes’ can learn to keep his mouth shut. Oh, and if they can avoid further complications from old friends too. Meanwhile, dark forces are afoot in the woods…

Luke McKoy’s fantasy comic continues to do a great job of focusing on the group of (mostly) likeably roguish ne’er-do-wells, while building hints of bigger things around them. Maddy and her take-no-crap attitude marks her as my favourite character, but generally the group, flaws and all, each have their moments.

I really like how there’s a big, well sketched world here and yet the focus is on zooming in and giving us a ground level view. The world building and overall feel of Fortune is enhanced immensely by its visuals; though I’ve read a digital copy of #3 that’s yet to be coloured, this does a great job of showcasing just how strong the artwork is in its most basic form.

Fortune is a great series, and puts me in mind of movies like Dungeons and Dragons: Honor Among Thieves or Guardians of the Galaxy. There’s definitely a similar vibe to its story of a group of miscreants who, sooner or later, will end up being forced to do the right thing not just for themselves, but for their world. I’m very much looking forward to issue 4!
