When Racer X won a race in the last issue, defeating the evil Tiger Syndicate in the process, I did wonder where the series would go from there.

Turns out, just one more issue to tie up loose ends and give the ‘resurrected’ race car driver a proper send-off, because Racer X #8 is the final issue of the series.

Racer X always felt like a great contrast to Speed Racer, the series it was spun out of. It’s a stylised, John-Wick-with-cars revenge story that was told economically, at an appropriately high speed.

The fight scenes and races were always superbly, inventively illustrated by Nuno Plati and there really was a decent amount of edginess. Writer Mark Russell steered clear of the camp silliness of Speed Racer entirely, and making it work really well indeed.

Racer X has been a great series; its self-contained story remained consistently strong and ended satisfyingly for the main character. Though I’m disappointed to see Racer X coming to an end, it’s good to see a publisher and creative team knowing when to hit the brakes, and ride off into the sunset knowing that they’ve done a great job.
