Having read and enjoyed the free comic book day issue of Warbird (which I think was an issue zero), I found it hard to resist this variant cover of the first issue. I love cosplay and photo covers, as you’ll know if you’ve seen my reviews of Red Sonja and Vampirella comics, but even they aren’t as impressive as this one, with a copy of a Warbird comic being photographed at 10,000 feet (by Jack Leddington, according to the image credit on the cover itself)!

This first issue opens with a mission that goes awry, and we’re then accompanying a freelance agent named Cole, who’s after a very high value target of an unusual kind. Soon enough, he’s asked to steal something that’s even more valuable, but will he take the job? Given the risks and personal stakes, he might be stupid to, but there’s one hell of a payday if he can pull it off…

Producer and screenwriter Derek Kolstad, known for creating John Wick, is a co-writer on Warbird, and his Hollywood credentials shine through immediately. There’s a gritty, realistic and high stakes feel to the action here, which gives Warbird the feel of a classic, cinematic espionage thriller.

Alex Maleev’s art certainly helps in this regard, giving Warbird a really grounded and tangible atmosphere.

It’s a really impressive first issue, and I’m definitely looking forward to seeing how Warbird develops over the course of its first storyline.
