Like UFO Robot Grendizer #1, I picked up Witchblade/Vampirella #1 on a whim despite not knowing much about Witchblade. Also like UFO Robot Grendizer #1, my purchase was mostly dictated by page count as well as the actual subject matter; the increased page count of Witchblade/Vampirella #1 made it seem like something I could really sink my teeth into (pun definitely intended).

Host of the titular Witchblade, Detective Sara Pezzini has her hands full when, on the trail of a serial killer, a monstrously mutated vampire is revealed as her target. After being attacked by the beast, Vampirella is on the scene to lend a hand, and assist Sara with her vampiric problem…

I wanted to like this; one-shot crossovers of this nature are usually really good fun. While enjoyable enough, it’s just disappointingly thin, both in terms of its script and art. Marguerite Bennett doesn’t go much further than the two heroes meeting, clashing then teaming up; a formula that was the expected norm for crossovers decades ago, but which the comic book form has mostly moved on from. Not so here, unfortunately.

I’m usually a fan of Laura Braga’s art too, but here it just feels (like the script) a little thin and, dare I say it, basic. There’s nothing especially wrong with it, but it does feel a little rushed and uninteresting. She does at least give Pezzini, in her alter ego’s form, a kick ass vampire redesign though.

It seems that Top Cow Comics (owners of Witchblade) and Dynamite Entertainment (current rights-holders for Vampirella) are taking the Marvel/DC, DC/Marvel approach and releasing a crossover each. Will Dynamite’s Vampirella/Witchblade #1 be a better meeting of the characters? We’re going to find out in a few weeks…
