After dismissing Vampirella for years on end as nothing more than a vehicle for gratuitous t and a (clearly not helped by these cosplay variant covers, which end up feeling much sleazier than others such as the Red Sonja cosplay variants), her appearances in a few crossovers and specials which ended up being pretty fun convinced me to give her own series a try.

As she has an incredibly convoluted and frequently retconned history, I thought that starting with the series that’s not long launched with a new #1 would be a good start. I was wrong.

Two of the female vampires take down drug runners. Another character takes a terrible tumble after losing her powers. A big secret is revealed.

That’s as good of a synopsis as you’re going to get from me, after I read this continually baffling story which hops, skips and jumps backwards and forwards in time to tell a story that probably isn’t as convoluted as it seems. It’s deeply confusing, and from reading reviews by fans online, it seems that a knowledge of Vampirella’s lore isn’t helpful either; it’s just  overcomplicated for the sake of it, and it seems like no one really knows what’s going on, or why.

The same goes for writer Priest, who doesn’t seem to be concerned at all with making this soapy, stupid saga make a bit of sense. The art is variable but at least it has bright spots; the same can’t be said for the atrocious script.

Is there even an editor on this? According to the credits, there is, but you’d be forgiven for thinking that anyone is in charge of this ridiculous mess.

Will things improve once the current storyline ends in issue #4? I’m not holding my breath…
