Newb wakes up to find herself helpless to react to a vicious attack, but is soon rescued by two strangers. With no memory of who or where she is, Newb is introduced, or reintroduced, to the world by her rescuers.

With elements of cyberpunk and dystopian fiction present, writer Ruth Osgood (also author of The Placement) gives us a tantalising glimpse at an intriguing world in The Scope #1.

Given that the main character has no memory of past events, she acts as a gateway for the reader too, with details of her surroundings and the workings of the world drip-fed both to her and us over the course of this opening chapter.

JR Turvey provides the underground comix-style art, a great fit for the outsiders and weirdness of The Scope’s status quo.

Given that it’s the opening issue, there are many questions raised and few answers to be found just yet, but the setup is very intriguing indeed. Elements such as the mercenary style job board, a cybernetically-enhanced Doctor and an underground home are all very interesting, but we don’t yet know a great deal about why or how the world has become so dangerous and lawless, or what the deal is with the walled city we glimpse at the start.

The geography of the world is a little confusing, and there are a few visual elements which aren’t entirely clear, but no doubt we’ll get answers as the series progresses.

It’s a really interesting start for the series though, and I look forward to seeing how The Scope progresses, as we piece together Newb’s story alongside her.
