The Hungry Ghost Festival should be an opportunity for the Turtles and their parents to get some well earned rest and relaxation. However, with the veil between the realms of the living and the dead at its thinnest during the festivities, and Baxter Stockman pushing looking to access the world of the dead alongside Karai, there’s no opportunity to take it easy for the TMNT…

It pains me to say it, but this issue just felt very weak. It doesn’t help that the whole Ujigami door knocker MacGuffin feels incredibly played out at this point, or that we seem to be constantly being reminded of the thinning veil between realms over Gene Luen Yang’s issues of TMNT. With both parents of the Turtles now resurrected, it seems like we should have moved on from the necromancy-adjacent plot devices, but alas that’s not the case.

It’s not bad, per se, but it does feel very repetitive and we do seem to be treading water somewhat here. Though there’s lots going on, it just feels like we’ve seen it before, and we aren’t really going anywhere interesting or new.
