The penultimate issue of Star Trek: The Last Starship sees a Borged-Up Kirk, Borg Queen Agnes, Captain Sato and their allies banding together to make a desperate, years-in-the-making final stand against the Emerald Chain. As Ferengi Dr. Zed enacts his plan, can the devastated, post-Burn universe be brought back from the brink after all?

I’ve been up and down on The Last Starship over the course of its run, and the build up to the climax has fallen pretty flat for me. Though the art has generally impressed me overall, I’ve not enjoyed the occasional slips into photo referencing that it suffers from (I mean look, that’s definitely Armin Shimerman’s Quark right there on the cover, right?), but I have really liked the moody, muted aesthetic and costume design.

Narratively though, I think that there’s too many issues with characters not justifying their continued presence (or at all) particularly convincingly, and it’s just felt too dark and depressing to be considered fun or enjoyable. I don’t have anything against darker toned comics, but with the inclusion of a resurrected Kirk I suppose I expected a bit more camp and fun than there has been.

It’s not for me, but that’s not to say that it’s not well produced, at the very least. Still, with one issue to go maybe it’ll go out with a bang. There’s certainly not long to go in order to find out…
