The first Transformers: Worst Bot Ever book introduced readers to Ballpoint, a tiny Decepticon with big ideas who isn’t as appreciated by his colleagues as he thinks he is. Or at all, in fact.

Spoilers abound now for the first book, Meet Ballpoint! By the end of the book, the tiny pen-bot has made some new friends and found that he can, in fact, prove to be very useful indeed.

At the start of this second book, readers are brought up to speed with Ballpoint, and his relationship with his new Autobot friends, many of whom will be instantly familiar to Transformers fans.

The little guy’s new peace is disrupted by a Decepticon attack, however, and the malfunction of a new gadget sees the hapless Ballpoint switching bodies with Decepticon leader, Megatron. Naturally, plenty of hijinks ensue!

Though aimed at the younger reader, the all-ages Bot Swap is a great read no matter your age. It’s genuinely hilarious and made me laugh out loud in parts (one word: underpants). Brian “Smitty” Smith fills the story with so many jokes, big and small, and it makes this such an effortlessly enjoyable read.

The stylised art is absolutely brilliant too. I love seeing the angular, goofy-eyed renditions of not just Ballpoint, but also all of the familiar faces too. There’s a brilliantly bouncy and kinetic charm to the illustrations and bot designs that give it so much life, character and suggested motion; Marz Jr. is the absolute perfect choice for these silly, hugely entertaining stories.

I really hope we see more of Ballpoint and his misadventures with the classic Autobots and Decepticons; I can’t get enough of this funny little guy, and if you have younger comic fans in the family, or even kids who you want to nudge into reading more, you could do a lot worse than introduce them to Ballpoint.
