Having not actually read the main DC KO crossover, I wasn’t best equipped to read DC KO: Boss Battle #1, which takes place in the middle of the fighting tournament epic. However, I couldn’t resist that variant cover, featuring Vampirella, Red Sonja and Sabrina with Wonder Woman (and I also picked up the cover featuring Sam Strong from Beneath the Trees Where Nobody Sees with the Joker too!).

That said, it’s not exactly difficult to pick up what’s going on here. The champions who are still left in the tournament need Omega energy in order to stop Darkseid, so they each visit a different world in a different universe to take part in more epic battles. Horror doll Annabelle, Mortal Kombat ninja Sub Zero, Homelander from The Boys, Samantha Strong and many others make appearances to take on the final champions from the DC universe.

It’s all a bit throwaway, and seems to simply exist to throw an admittedly impressive array of characters from different comics and franchises into the fray. No one really gets enough of a page count to make a big mark, though I did get a kick out of Samantha Strong’s bloody appearance (after her introduction, however, she’s almost completely wasted).

It’s all nicely done from the point of view of the art, but it does feel a bit unnecessary. Still, those covers eh?
