We reach the fifth and final one-shot in the Hellraiser: Resurrections series. Each issue focuses on a different Cenobite (though there’s at least one issue where it’s not who you may expect), along with how and why they’re resurrected after being banished to different levels of Hell. Each issue of the series has incorporated elements from the Hellraiser movie trilogy to great effect, but they haven’t always been consistently good. Is The Return of the Priest ending the series on a high note?
Trapped in middle Hell (surely this should be more inventively named?), an unnamed man laments the lack of physical sensation on his body, pushing himself beyond the limits of the flesh (as is the case for many characters in Clive Barker’s Hellraiser lore). Can he find a way to ascend, and if so, what will his new form be?
This is my favourite issue of Hellraiser: Resurrections. It feels so authentically Barker-esque in its voice, its themes and its imagery, and it builds to a thrilling climax that features the return of a familiar face, alongside some exciting new ones. There’s a really cool and unexpected fourth wall break too.
I feel fully armed and ready for the main Hellraiser series now. Though inconsistent, I’ve enjoyed Resurrections overall, and it’s pulling on some interesting threads that should be very interesting to see playing out when the new series launches.
The Order of the Gash is torn asunder, but reborn, and new Orders are forming. I’m looking forward to seeing how it all falls apart once more.
Hi! I’m Jason, and I write for midlifegamergeek.com, every single day. Not only do I earn no income from my writing here (though I may earn small fees from affiliate links posted on my pages; as an Amazon Associate, I earn from qualifying purchases from these links), but it seems that my work has, at times, been stolen and re-used by lazy, morally bankrupt idiots.
