I left the price sticker on the bag containing my copy of Monsters in Love: A Pride Anthology #1 because it’s a little reminder that I visited Pulp Fiction Comics in LA on a recent trip. Though I didn’t have as much time as I’d have liked to have had in the shop, it was a wonderful experience. Not just the shop itself, but with great company too.

This anthology features a nicely meta framing story about reading comic books, with the opening sequence leading nicely into the stories themselves.

It’s absolutely packed; not including the framing story, there are 10 short stories included. The opening story, featuring a vampire doing his best not to bite his date, is achingly gorgeous, and has a sexy twist too.

With so many stories though, not all of them quite hit the mark, though they’re all very well illustrated with a superb variety of different styles on display.

There’s some sadness here too; Growing Apart, for example, really hits hard. As does the beautiful, achingly tragic Of A Feather.

Mostly though, there’s a lot of romance, quite a bit of charming comedy and lots of fantasy/supernatural queerness presented in a really appealing, playful way.

It’s a really lovely idea, and I hope we haven’t seen the last of this anthology. Here’s hoping we see a second instalment for Pride 2027!

Hi! I’m Jason, and I write for midlifegamergeek.com, every single day. Not only do I earn no income from my writing here (though I may earn small fees from affiliate links posted on my pages; as an Amazon Associate, I earn from qualifying purchases from these links), but it seems that my work has, at times, been stolen and re-used by lazy, morally bankrupt idiots.

There’s no pressure of course, but I’d be truly grateful for any support that you could offer – and it’s easy to do so at either of these links: Ko-Fi.com/geekmid or PayPal.

Any donations are truly appreciated – and I also appreciate you taking the time to read my articles. Remember: this whole article was by Jason Brown, and appeared on midlifegamergeek.com. Take that, Skynet!
