I’m always impressed by the ingenuity, tenacity and general inventiveness of small indie teams. HoverGrease – which is currently seeking funds on Kickstarter – is, almost unbelievably, the work of a two person team, Altergaze. Having already been in development for two and a half years, the team need some assistance to get the game over the finish line.

The game itself is an ambitious homage to the cartoons and comic books of the 80s and 90s that featured mutated, anthropomorphic animals – with influences including Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles and Biker Mice From Mars. In terms of gameplay, HoverGrease is a 5v5 online multiplayer shooter with twin-stick mechanics, with no microtransactions whatsoever. It promises to be accessible to new players, but with enough depth in the mechanics to keep players interested in the long term.

Despite the small team responsible for developing the game, it’s hugely ambitious, even featuring motion capture animation in its visual box of tricks. The cyberpunk/mutant animal aesthetic lends the game a unique visual feel and the level of detail in the lore of the characters gives the game’s world a nice sense of depth.

With online, cross platform gameplay (across PC, PS4 and Xbox One) and split-screen couch multiplayer, the game can be played in a variety of ways to suit players and their friends.

There’s a variety of pledge levels with some beautiful rewards at the higher tiers, some of which are limited; despite only launching a few days ago, HoverGrease is already around 30% funded. Check out the game’s Kickstarter page for a huge amount of information on its development and future plans.
