Just when you thought it was safe to venture back to the Star Wars comic line, it turns out that – like Boba Fett himself – War of the Bounty Hunters isn’t over after all. Despite the final issue of the War of the Bounty Hunters series wrapping things up – or at least moving things on to the next, no doubt exhausting, crossover – here we are this week with the first of two issues that should really have been published prior to the crossover’s climax. Believe it or not, these two issues aren’t even the last crossover titles to come either.

Ochi of Bestoon – Darth Vader’s loyal servant – is fighting the traitorous Sly Moore, who may not be as duplicitous as she seems. Meanwhile, Vader’s pursuit of his son is cut short when he’s called back to deal with a Hutt attack on the Imperial flagship.

Despite my reservations – and the fact that War of the Bounty Hunters lost my interest way before it limped to its non-conclusion – I’m pleased to report that this issue was excellent. Not only is it full of action, political intrigue and backstabbing, but there’s also some incredibly satisfying, very dark Vader badassery of the like we rarely see on screen (making it all the more effective – just as in that scene in Rogue One). Greg Pak seems to be energised again after going through the motions mid-crossover, when there was little to cover but that damn Crimson Dawn auction that seemed to last for months.

Raffaele Ienco’s art is superb too, with both the action and quieter moments being handled perfectly.

The ending is a stunner too and – dare I even think it – perhaps does get me a little excited for the next chapter, even though we’re heading straight into another crossover.
