Though there’s a general lack of oomph – that I’m sure befalls everyone – after the excitement and then relaxation of the Christmas period, it’s a good time to pause and reflect on how the previous twelve months have gone. I started this blog and my social media account back in 2019 (hey, remember those days…we had no idea what was in store for us, did we?) with the intention of having an outlet for my writing; writing was always a passion of mine, but I lacked confidence and that affected my motivation to keep it up. Having somewhere to write and a Twitter account on which to share my ramblings was an absolute godsend – and it not only gave me the confidence to keep on writing daily, but also to reach out to other websites and publications with a view to writing for them too.
2021 perhaps saw my biggest successes in terms of getting my writing out there. I had work featured on a reasonably regular basis at Retro Dodo and then Pokemon Helper, but also featured in high profile gaming journal, [lock-on] 002 from Lost in Cult. Perhaps my biggest and proudest achievement, however, was being published on Polygon; though of course being featured on such a huge website was definitely something to be proud of, it was actually the fact that I got to write about a lifelong passion – the Aliens franchise – in my article for them. I wrote a piece going into detail on which Aliens novels strayed from the usual formula for them, ranking each of the books (published by Titan) by originality and giving a mini review of each too.
Though I’m often frustrated and saddened by the lack of response or feedback when I’m pitching articles to new or even existing publications/sites, the few successes I’ve had really have made all of that difficulty worth pushing ahead regardless. As this very blog nears its 1000th daily article in a row – which is going to be an achievement that’ll be hard to top in itself – it’s worth remembering that less than three years ago, I hadn’t written an article or anything of note for a decade or more, so despite beating myself up about my lack of progress on a constant basis, it’s actually really helpful to stop, take a breather and realise exactly how far I’ve come in such a short space of time. Not bad for someone in their 40s who never thought they’d get back to writing again after having a few articles published in their 20s, right?
And if I can do it, you can too. Whatever it is you need to push yourself to do this year – do it. You won’t regret it.

However, I’d be truly grateful for any support that you could offer – and it’s easy to do so at either of these links: Ko-Fi.com/geekmid or PayPal.
Any donations are truly appreciated – and I also appreciate you taking the time to read my articles. Thank you so much!
