Though I’ve played through a significant chunk of the Gem Wizards Tactics story, I’m still not entirely sure what’s actually going on. However, it’s not without its charms and the gameplay itself is pretty addictive, even if the baffling politics of the story aren’t as clear as they could be.

Quirky, visually (and mechanically) distinct factions – including Potatoes, unusually – and a pastel colour scheme gives the game a unique look, with the procedurally generated maps (and enemies) making each stage feel fresh and keeping the player on their toes throughout.

Though perhaps initially feeling somewhat like Advance Wars or Fire Emblem, the aforementioned procedural elements and unique, asymmetrical units give Gem Wizards Tactics a very different feel to other turn-based strategy games.

It’s a fun game that offers something new and unique even to seasoned turn based strategy veterans, but don’t expect to come away having grasped the intricacies of the inter-faction conflicts. The stories of games such as Advance Wars came secondary to the addictive gameplay however, so Gem Wizards Tactics isn’t unique in that regard.

With a wealth of game modes and inventive, unusual and asymmetric factions to choose from – as well as the random generation of maps and even a map editor – Gem Wizards Tactics is a pretty fully featured package that strategy fans will get a lot out of.
