I read and reviewed an awful lot of comics in 2022, with many of them being very enjoyable indeed.

Some lost their way after strong starts (Alien, for one example, as well as DC vs Vampires), others maintained consistent quality (hello, the surprisingly fun Madballs vs Garbage Pail (Kids!) and still others just didn’t quite hit the mark at all (the final run of GI Joe: A Real American Hero at IDW immediately springs to mind).

Yet of them all, I had a clear favourite that pretty much blew away all of the competition – Daniel Warren Johnson’s superb wrestling fantasy, Do A Powerbomb.

In Do A Powerbomb, a tragedy in the ring sets a young girl – Lona Steelrose – on a path to follow in her mother’s footsteps, albeit against the advice of everyone she knows. When a too-good-to-refuse supernatural deal is put on the table, Lona finds herself fighting in a dangerous, inter-dimensional wrestling tournament with the deadly masked wrestler Cobrasun as a tag team partner.

It’s a hugely exciting comic with a clear knowledge of wrestling on display; the action in the ring is stunningly kinetic and brilliantly clear from a storytelling point of view. The ebb and flow of the drama in real wrestling matches comes across with great clarity and the drama beyond the ring is surprisingly heartfelt too.

It’s a genuinely touching story and the climactic issue really doesn’t turn out how you’d expect either; it’s a genuinely involving and unpredictable read.

Daniel Warren Johnson’s script and art deliver on every level, making Do A Powerbomb a clear choice for my favourite comic of 2022; importantly, the drama and tragedy at the heart of the tale makes it a worthwhile read for anyone, regardless of their interest in wrestling.
