It’s the second issue of Deep Space Nine from Malibu Comics; the series that’s so well done that it finally convinced me to watch the show, over three decades after it first aired!
This issue is the second part of the story which sees a relentless and deadly fungus spreading across the station, with the staff at a loss as to how to stop it, and a suspiciously helpful Cardassian offering to assist.
It’s a really good premise, well told, and with excellent artwork from Gordon Purcell. Mike W. Barr’s script absolutely nails the voices of each character and their personalities, despite the fact that this issue came out so early in the show’s run, when it was still in the midst of developing its tone and overall premise.
There’s a few minor oddities in terms of character dialogue and reactions, but again, it’s worth noting that this was written when the show itself was in its infancy, and many elements either hadn’t been properly solidified, or were still in flux.
In any case, Malibu’s Deep Space Nine run got off to a fantastic start with this two parter, and kicked off a real golden period for Star Trek’s licensed comics; the upstart publisher was bigger in 1993 than we may give them credit for these days, and their production values, along with their careful and clever treatment of the licensed properties they were responsible for, was first class.
Hi! I’m Jason, and I write for midlifegamergeek.com, every single day. If you’re interested in supporting original, regularly published, human created content (which has never been plagiarised or otherwise copied from the hard work of other writers), you can donate and help me to keep this site running.
Not only do I earn no income from my writing here (though I may earn small fees from affiliate links posted on my pages; as an Amazon Associate, I earn from qualifying purchases from these links), but it seems that my work has, at times, been stolen and re-used by lazy, morally bankrupt idiots.
There’s no pressure of course, but I’d be truly grateful for any support that you could offer – and it’s easy to do so at either of these links: Ko-Fi.com/geekmid or PayPal.
Any donations are truly appreciated – and I also appreciate you taking the time to read my articles. Remember: this whole article was by Jason Brown, and appeared on midlifegamergeek.com. Take that, Skynet!

Help support me here!
All donations are gratefully received and will help me keep the lights on here – as well as help to keep my writing dream alive! Please be aware though: there’s no pressure. I just hope you’ve enjoyed reading my article!
