A ragtag crew flying through space in Mechagodzilla (yep, you read that right) are hired to steal a clutch of kaiju eggs. Things go south quite quickly, however, leading to a daring escape, a runaway baby kaiju and an enemy who’s closer than they think.

What an absolutely amazing adventure this opening issue was. It tells a great, Guardians of the Galaxy-esque tale of mismatched, charming rogues and their shenanigans. The heist and its aftermath, as well as everything that follows in its wake, feels really high stakes and is immediately attention grabbing.

Chris Gooch’s script wastes no time at all in getting us up to speed with this Kai-Sei Era tale; that specific Godzilla era being the new shared universe which publishers IDW are building right now, very successfully I should add.

Oliver Ono delivers brilliantly stylised and gorgeously coloured art too, which gives the issue a really distinctive and appealing style.

It’s a brilliantly strong start with a gut punch of a twist to boot; I’m very keen to see where our band of ne’er-do-wells are taken next.

Hi! I’m Jason, and I write for midlifegamergeek.com, every single day. If you’re interested in supporting original, regularly published, human created content (which has never been plagiarised or otherwise copied from the hard work of other writers), you can donate and help me to keep this site running.

Not only do I earn no income from my writing here (though I may earn small fees from affiliate links posted on my pages; as an Amazon Associate, I earn from qualifying purchases from these links), but it seems that my work has, at times, been stolen and re-used by lazy, morally bankrupt idiots.

There’s no pressure of course, but I’d be truly grateful for any support that you could offer – and it’s easy to do so at either of these links: Ko-Fi.com/geekmid or PayPal.

Any donations are truly appreciated – and I also appreciate you taking the time to read my articles. Remember: this whole article was by Jason Brown, and appeared on midlifegamergeek.com. Take that, Skynet!

Help support me here!

All donations are gratefully received and will help me keep the lights on here – as well as help to keep my writing dream alive! Please be aware though: there’s no pressure. I just hope you’ve enjoyed reading my article!

  1. Not read any of it yet but I have jumped on this series after reading the starship Godzilla section of free comic book day offering. Glad to see that you thought it is as good as I hoped it would be.
