I discovered the richly open ended, deeply involving sci-fi game Starflight back in the 90s, when it made the somewhat improbable jump from home computers to Sega’s 16-bit Mega Drive/Genesis. A clear inspiration for games such as Mass Effect, it’s aged well in many ways and is still a game I like to revisit from time to time.

Starflight has also partly inspired a new title in the Solar Echoes universe: Star Fated. Creator Andy Mitchell also lists games such as Diablo and GTA as unlikely sources of inspiration; the former due to its addictive loot collecting and customisation options, the latter due to its open world structure and story told from the POV of criminals.

Despite being a few years away from release, the trailer and other currently announced details make it look incredibly appealing. A top-down, free roaming adventure in which you play as an outlaw starship captain, Star Fated is fully voice acted, with a strong narrative focus.

There’s also the fact that your choices and actions throughout the game will have meaningful consequences, some of which may well come to haunt you as you continue to progress.

You can wishlist Solar Echoes: Star Fated right now on Steam. It’s certainly a game that I’ll be keeping an eye on, as I’m always on the lookout for my next potential, contemporary replacement for the positively ancient Starflight!

Hi! I’m Jason, and I write for midlifegamergeek.com, every single day. If you’re interested in supporting original, regularly published, human created content (which has never been plagiarised or otherwise copied from the hard work of other writers), you can donate and help me to keep this site running.

Not only do I earn no income from my writing here (though I may earn small fees from affiliate links posted on my pages; as an Amazon Associate, I earn from qualifying purchases from these links), but it seems that my work has, at times, been stolen and re-used by lazy, morally bankrupt idiots.

There’s no pressure of course, but I’d be truly grateful for any support that you could offer – and it’s easy to do so at either of these links: Ko-Fi.com/geekmid or PayPal.

Any donations are truly appreciated – and I also appreciate you taking the time to read my articles. Remember: this whole article was by Jason Brown, and appeared on midlifegamergeek.com. Take that, Skynet!

All donations are gratefully received and will help me keep the lights on here – as well as help to keep my writing dream alive! Please be aware though: there’s no pressure. I just hope you’ve enjoyed reading my article!
