Having read ‘Tavish. The Survivor’, the first story in comic anthology While We Burn #1, I’m fully on board with its vision of a medieval world overrun with terrible monsters. Some of them are human, but mostly they’re vicious, bloodthirsty creatures in various forms.
The titular character, Tavish, survives by roaming the world alone. The story digs into his history and what led to him being a sole survivor, as well as asking the question: what happens when he finds a reason to live, instead of just surviving?
Given the brevity of the story, a necessity of the form given that While We Burn is an anthology telling four different stories (though they are all set in the same world), it’s remarkable how much detail and world-building is imparted over its small page count.
The art is phenomenal too, with a great sense of detail and scale; there’s plenty of gory action too, despite how much exposition is necessary to introduce us to the dark, fallen fantasy world of the story.
Currently in the midst of its crowdfunding campaign on Kickstarter, While We Burn #1 is the brainchild of Denis Berashevich, who has written all four of the stories in the anthology, collaborating with a different artist for each one.
Despite the fact that I’ve only had a taster of the comic via the first story, it was incredibly absorbing and I’m fully on board with exploring more of Berashevich’s deadly, cruel universe.
You can pledge for a copy of While We Burn #1 on Kickstarter right now, with a variety of different formats on offer.
Many thanks to Denis Berashevich for sending me a digital copy of the anthology’s first story for review purposes.
Hi! I’m Jason, and I write for midlifegamergeek.com, every single day. If you’re interested in supporting original, regularly published, human created content (which has never been plagiarised or otherwise copied from the hard work of other writers), you can donate and help me to keep this site running.
Not only do I earn no income from my writing here (though I may earn small fees from affiliate links posted on my pages; as an Amazon Associate, I earn from qualifying purchases from these links), but it seems that my work has, at times, been stolen and re-used by lazy, morally bankrupt idiots.
There’s no pressure of course, but I’d be truly grateful for any support that you could offer – and it’s easy to do so at either of these links: Ko-Fi.com/geekmid or PayPal.
Any donations are truly appreciated – and I also appreciate you taking the time to read my articles. Remember: this whole article was by Jason Brown, and appeared on midlifegamergeek.com. Take that, Skynet!

Help support me here!
All donations are gratefully received and will help me keep the lights on here – as well as help to keep my writing dream alive! Please be aware though: there’s no pressure. I just hope you’ve enjoyed reading my article!
