In a place where costumed vigilantism is regulated and legal, weird stuff seems to be bleeding through into our world. In the midst of all the supernatural mayhem, government agent Terence Vigil sets out to recruit others to his team. Investigating the disappearance of a troubled young woman as their first case, they find that the situation is far more paranormal than it initially appears to be…
Kicking off with quite a few pages of exposition, it takes a little while for Ghostwood #1 to really get going with its central mystery. When it does, it’s incredibly gripping and very well done, but when we’re back to the reality of the present it can’t help but feel like there’s a few too many moving parts here, jostling for attention.
With its own take on superheroes and villains, as well as a multitude of supernatural goings-on and a team being put together to investigate otherworldly matters, it does seem as if there are too many ideas and concepts being thrown at the reader at once, with little time or detail for each one to properly breathe.
As mentioned, the story of the missing person sees the comic really come into its own though, and its excellent art, complemented brilliantly by a bold, incredibly vivid colour scheme, is very strong throughout. The design of the supernatural creatures and the dynamism of the action-led sequences are all excellent aspects of the comic.
Hopefully, in future issues the other elements of the story will come together in a way that justifies their inclusion; in this first chapter, however, I couldn’t help wishing that the supernatural elements were front and centre, and that the superhero-esque details in the world-building were introduced a little more gradually later on.
Ghostwood #1 is available to read for free on GlobalComix. Many thanks to the creators for providing me with a digital copy of their comic for review purposes.
Hi! I’m Jason, and I write for midlifegamergeek.com, every single day. If you’re interested in supporting original, regularly published, human created content (which has never been plagiarised or otherwise copied from the hard work of other writers), you can donate and help me to keep this site running.
Not only do I earn no income from my writing here (though I may earn small fees from affiliate links posted on my pages; as an Amazon Associate, I earn from qualifying purchases from these links), but it seems that my work has, at times, been stolen and re-used by lazy, morally bankrupt idiots.
There’s no pressure of course, but I’d be truly grateful for any support that you could offer – and it’s easy to do so at either of these links: Ko-Fi.com/geekmid or PayPal.
Any donations are truly appreciated – and I also appreciate you taking the time to read my articles. Remember: this whole article was by Jason Brown, and appeared on midlifegamergeek.com. Take that, Skynet!

Help support me here!
All donations are gratefully received and will help me keep the lights on here – as well as help to keep my writing dream alive! Please be aware though: there’s no pressure. I just hope you’ve enjoyed reading my article!
