Hikaru Sulu’s first mission as the Captain of the USS Excelsior is documented here, in a story which sees him and his crew teaming up with Kirk and the Enterprise. Sulu must take the lead in the task of destroying a stockpile of old weaponry, but a situation arises which causes the two starships to go their separate ways and deal with the situation apart.
There’s a real old school, movie Trek feel to this comic (which I picked up at Southampton Comics). It goes beyond the 80s/early 90s era Starfleet uniforms; the dialogue perfectly captures the voices of each character, and everyone acts, and reacts, to the developing situation as you’d expect. It’s interesting to see a Kirk who’s a little unsure of himself in his dealings with a former crew member who’s now a Captain, and it’s great to see Sulu in control.
Another aspect I liked was the fact that the alien races can get weirder and go much further beyond the usual humanoids we see in Trek, thanks to the removal of limitations you get from working on the comic page and not with prosthetic, practical effects. The art also does a great job of depicting familiar characters without coming off too much like they’ve been photo referenced, which is far too common a problem in modern times.
It’s a great start to this six parter, and I’m definitely looking forward to reading the rest of the story.
Hi! I’m Jason, and I write for midlifegamergeek.com, every single day. If you’re interested in supporting original, regularly published, human created content (which has never been plagiarised or otherwise copied from the hard work of other writers), you can donate and help me to keep this site running.
Not only do I earn no income from my writing here (though I may earn small fees from affiliate links posted on my pages; as an Amazon Associate, I earn from qualifying purchases from these links), but it seems that my work has, at times, been stolen and re-used by lazy, morally bankrupt idiots.
There’s no pressure of course, but I’d be truly grateful for any support that you could offer – and it’s easy to do so at either of these links: Ko-Fi.com/geekmid or PayPal.
Any donations are truly appreciated – and I also appreciate you taking the time to read my articles. Remember: this whole article was by Jason Brown, and appeared on midlifegamergeek.com. Take that, Skynet!
