With just a few days of its Kickstarter crowdfunding campaign left to go, I thought I’d revisit While We Burn #1, and check out the second and third of the four stories in the comic book anthology.

Having already taken a look at the first story and being very impressed with its world-building and the gorgeous art, I was very excited to check out the rest of the comic.

Creator Denis Berashevich kindly passed on the next stories for me to read: King of the Night and Pray.

King of the Night sees a noble thief on a mission to retrieve an important artifact from a castle, and encountering much more than he bargained for. In Pray, circumstances seem dire for a group of people inside a church, but can their gods help them?

Each story is told with its own art style, both stories being very impressive from a visual standpoint.

King of the Night is a thrilling, twisty tale which surprises right up until it’s final panel; my only criticism here is that the text which appears on a scroll, and seems vital to fleshing out certain aspects of the story, can be hard to read in parts due to the different colours used for the text.

Though Pray is another visually sumptuous story, with some genuinely fantastic realism injected into the fantastical setting, I did find a few aspects of the story a little unclear. Despite this confusion, overall it builds nicely on what comes before.

Berashevich has created a really compelling fantasy realm here, with plenty of substance; the dark tone will appeal to fans of gritty genre fiction such as Game of Thrones, or video games in the vein of Dark Souls.

If this sounds like it’ll be up your street, you can back While We Burn #1 on Kickstarter, at a variety of pledge levels with a number of items available in addition to the comic, including art and even a soundtrack to help you immerse yourself into its dark fantasy world even more!
