After reading the first issue of Vampirella’s 2026 reboot series, I was left very confused indeed. So many characters, so much going on, and a ridiculous amount of jumping back and forth to different events that it was utterly baffling. Certainly not a good jumping on point for new readers, or even those without an encyclopedic knowledge of Vampirella’s recent history.

This second issue features a visit to the shrink with a surprising transformation, the interception of a drug deal, a shoplifter stopped, a sapphic sex scene and a murder. And even more besides.

The trouble with this is that so much of it just feels inexplicable. The jumping around to different characters at different times means that it’s hard to follow what’s happening when, or why, and there is so much reliant on prior events that even long term Vampirella fans are likely to feel lost.

It’s admirable that Christopher Priest wants to bring his multi-layered narrative approach to Vampirella, but when it’s completely at the expense of understanding what’s going on, or why, even at a basic level, then you have to admit that it just doesn’t work.

It’s a real shame, because Priest has been known to mine gold from the same approach in the past, but here it just feels like he’s throwing everything at the wall at the same time, and nothing is sticking at all.
