Dracula’s determination to redeem himself has taken him onto a German train containing a deadly virus, which he must stop at all costs. With the Allies in the air above the train and each carriage filled with an assortment of grunts and super-powered Nazis, can Dracula stop the train before it’s too late? And just how did he end up making the deal to assist in this mission in the first place? All will be revealed in issue 2 of Operation: Iron Coffin!

The first issue of Operation: Iron Coffin was such a blast, with almost unbelievably propulsive, non-stop action and gore. Dracula’s louche, Gary Oldman-esque form here is great for the gory, vicious takedowns of rank-and-file soldiers as well as the bigger bosses he takes on as he progresses. It’s such a fantastic concept for a comic, and though the pace slows a little with a flashback to fill in some of the blanks in Dracula’s post-resurrection backstory, it feels like that pause for breath is definitely needed, and really adds weight to the otherwise relentless action.

There’s a real art to the storytelling here from writer Kenny Porter given how much ground is covered, and how much Dracula (and his enemies, as well as the train itself) abide by the rule of cool, with the main character tearing his way through the hurtling locomotive like a supernatural John Wick. Artist Tyrell Cannon’s stylised illustrations only falter a few times in terms of being able to tell what’s going on. Which can easily be forgiven, as the fight scenes are numerous, bloody and filled with excellent choreography.

It really kicks ass, and I can’t wait to see how Operation: Iron Coffin concludes.
