As an absolutely huge fan of Escape from New York (I wore a Snake Plissken shirt when I met John Carpenter, who signed a Snake Plissken action figure for me), I was cautiously excited when a new Escape from New York series was announced. I was baffled by the naming convention of the series, which is very bizarre, but with publishers Mad Cave Studios in charge, I had faith that they could do the concept, and Snake Plissken himself, justice.
This issue sees us reintroduced to Snake as someone who helps smuggle people across the dangerous dead zones between cities for cold, hard cash. When a run goes wrong outside the walls of Chicago, Snake is drawn reluctantly into a rescue mission that’ll see him break into the city. Going against his code of conduct, Snake is tasked with extracting someone from Chicago and then getting the hell out of there. It’s a dangerous job, but Plissken might just be the only man who could pull it off.
There’s some good work here, and I really like the stylised art which has a bit of a chunky, underground comix feel at times.
There’s a few odd moments, such as a very bizarre lack of reaction and emotion when one character bites the dust, and some panels lack clarity in their storytelling, but on the whole it’s pretty well put together.
Writer Kyle Higgins nails the bleak, anti-authoritarian vibe of Escape from New York, and in particular the character of Snake Plissken. One of cinema’s most enduringly awesome badasses, Plissken is just effortlessly cool, and that carries across here too.
The setup here is intriguing, but it’s too early to say whether it’ll pay off; however, if Higgins follows Carpenter’s approach of having Snake run into, and away from, a seemingly limitless supply of oddballs on his mission, as was the case in the two Escape from… movies, this should be a fun ride.
Hi! I’m Jason, and I write for midlifegamergeek.com, every single day. Not only do I earn no income from my writing here (though I may earn small fees from affiliate links posted on my pages; as an Amazon Associate, I earn from qualifying purchases from these links), but it seems that my work has, at times, been stolen and re-used by lazy, morally bankrupt idiots.
