A religious leader is found murdered in his compound, and the local police are faced with a mystery. Things should be relatively straightforward: the compound is locked, and there are just 49 people living there. But the late leader had seven wives, and most, if not all, of them, have at least some motive for carrying out the vicious killing. There’s a lot more bubbling under the surface than there appears to be at first, and one of the investigators seems to have her own history with the religious order…

There’s a lot going on in this first issue, with a sprawling cast and lots of exposition to cover. It’s mostly handled well, though the art can make it hard to distinguish between each of the wives at times.

That said, the story itself, with multiple layers and horrific flashbacks of the mistreatment of these poor women by a powerful man, is riveting, and feels incredibly timely too. There’s also a decent page count, so things don’t feel too rushed or brief either.

This is a great start to another original IDW series, and I look forward to catching up with the rest of the issues.
