I first became aware of cheeky retro-electro funk duo Chromeo in 2007 at a British festival called The Big Chill. For a number of years back then, I used to attend that particular festival with a group of close friends; it was small but grew to a decent enough size that it attracted some phenomenal acts – and it was always a fantastic place to discover new music. Chromeo were described in the festival brochure as a band whose songs had lyrics that would ‘make Phil Collins weep’ – and that was enough to draw me in. Their set was incredible; a shot of 80s funk with a modern spin and some very tongue in cheek lyrics. I saw them live a few more times over the next few years and was similarly blown away every time by their act; it was like being transported back in time to the gigs I saw in movies as a kid – drenched in synths, with an ice-cool, leather jacketed front man in shades and vocoder-distorted backing vocals from the keyboard-playing other member of the duo. I was addicted – and have been ever since.

And as if the rest of us don’t feel bad enough about how little we got done during the COVID-19 lockdown, here’s Dave 1 and P-Thugg with a concept EP featuring songs all about life, love and Zoom meetings in the current climate of social distancing and self-isolation, with the entire EP reportedly being recorded and produced in just two weeks.

Unsurprisingly, it’s awesome. It’s full of the trademark Chromeo humour, wit and undeniable style, with the five song titles making the theme loud and clear: Clorox Wipe, 6 Feet Away, Stay in Bed (And Do Nothing), ‘Roni Got Me Stressed Out and Cabin Fever. Not only that, but it’s got that shimmering, classy Chromeo funk despite being five (hilarious) songs about a pandemic. Genius.

In case five tracks just isn’t enough, there’s instrumental versions of each track too. And let’s face it – we could all do with more Chromeo in our lives. Especially in 2020.
