Though it’s a bit of a strange time for me to be reviewing a comic released for Easter, I’ve been determined to cover every one of the Rebellion Specials released in 2020 – and The Cor!! Buster Easter Special was one I was certain I’d already written about, but it turns out I somehow overlooked it – despite reading it during the week it was released.
Though labelled as a Cor!! Buster Special and featuring characters from both of those classic comics, there are several characters making an appearance who also originated in other British kids comics from the 70s onwards. Additionally, there’s even new characters such as the Swines of Anarchy (no surprises for guessing what that’s satirising), though they’ve appeared before (in the 2019 Cor!! Buster Special).
Though aimed at younger readers – who’ll get the most from the pun-heavy, anarchic humour throughout the Special – it’s still a nostalgic thrill to see so many classic characters, such as infant terror Sweeny Toddler, sweetly innocent monster Frankie Stein and toothless Jaws-wannabe Gums, get new stories and a modern lick of paint. The art styles vary between character to character, but it’s lovely to see the visual gag-laden panels of Sweeny Toddler faithfully recreated; though not laugh-out-loud funny for adults it is still midly amusing and the art really is fantastic throughout.
Activities and reprints of Ken Reid’s weird monsters are also included; if you grew up reading comics in the 70s and 80s, as I did, you’re likely stumble upon strips featuring characters you may have thought long-lost. It’s wonderful to see Rebellion again making good use of the character rights they now hold in such a lovingly, respectfully updated way.
