Though the concept itself seems incredibly leftfield – with a group of breakfast cereal box mascots uniting to defend the treasure of The Perfectly Balanced Breakfast from a mysterious villain – somehow, creators José Garcia, Ryan Little and Nikki Powers have crafted a first chapter that feels incredibly epic, with great action scenes and high drama aplenty throughout its 54 pages.
There’s quite a few characters to introduce over the course of the first issue, but I never felt as if the story was bogged down with needless exposition; let’s face it, we’re all familiar with the characters used to sell us our breakfast, but it’s cool to see characters of that ilk band together to take on what seems to be a real and serious threat to their existence. It feels as if there’s a weighty mythology at play behind the slightly eccentric exterior and it’s really well handled over the course of the story.
The Kickstarter launched just a few days ago and has already reached 105% of its funding – and if you take a look at the preview pages (as well as the brilliant, cereal box homage of the cover) on the campaign page, it’s easy to see why. The art is phenomenal, with a very strong animated feel to the characters – and the worldbuilding is really impressive too, both from the art and writing perspectives.
If you like the sound of the unique concept and you’re as impressed as I was with the comic itself (though I have to give a disclaimer at this point, as I have been fortunate enough to have had the opportunity to read the whole issue, not just the preview pages; thanks to Plastic Sword Press providing me with a review copy), it’s well worth checking out the different pledge levels available when backing the comic’s crowdfunding campaign. There’s a lot of great stuff on offer, including tons of comic material previously published by Plastic Sword Press.
