Having launched on Kickstarter on the 9th of March and achieved its funding goal in just 12 hours, it’s clear that Night Market – a worker placement board game with resource management mechanics – is going to be very popular.
The theme is an unusual one; players are business owners looking to acquire different foods from the city to feed the hungry customers making their way through the Taiwanese night market of the title.
Based on designer Adam Zwain’s experience of Taiwan’s bustling markets and the wonderful sights, sounds and tastes contained within them, the game features many examples of real world Taiwanese food and a colourful, culturally appropriate design that evokes the true feel of these wonderful places. To ensure that the game remains respectful and authentic, three cultural consultants – Maja Lee, Smoox Chen and Yut Wah Ornstein – have assisted with the process of bringing the game to life.
Talon Strikes Studios are a relatively small – but highly regarded – publisher, who’ve seen success with a number of other crowdfunding campaigns to bring board games to market in the last few years, so it’s clear that Night Market is in good, reliable hands. With a number of Kickstarter exclusive features, it’s well worth checking out the campaign and backing the game if it looks like it’ll be up your street; the wooden heart and scooter tokens alone make for a very appealing visual upgrade that won’t be available in the standard retail versions of the game.
With 19 days to go, it’s clear that Night Market is likely to attract a lot more attention from gamers and unlock even more features to make pledges feel extra special. With the final game estimated to be ready to ship in April 2022, however, it’ll be a while until Night Market is in the hands of backers, but I have absolutely no doubt that it’ll be worth the wait.
