Another jaunt back to the Amalgam Universe now, following on from the absolute mess of Spider-Boy’s supposed solo issue (which was anything but, with multiple panels on each page just there to introduce another ‘cleverly’ altered character). Is this one worth it? Let’s find out.

Spider-Boy is pushed and pulled through different time periods in an effort to prevent chronal collapse. When an innocent kid gets hurt, however, can Spider-Boy realise that the needs of the many outweigh the needs of the few?

If you thought Spider-Boy #1 was an overstuffed mess of pointless cameos and terrible dialogue, boy are you in for a surprise. Somehow, Spider-Boy Team-Up is even worse, with a ridiculously convoluted, timey-wimey plot in which Spider-Boy himself does nothing but listen to exposition until the final few pages. It’s painfully bad, and an absolute waste of the cool, inter-company mashup idea.

What’s the point of introducing dozens of characters by name and appearance if none of them are going to do anything? It’s utterly bizarre, and just feels like another excuse to awkwardly jam two names or words together to make a new character or setting. Scavulture, anyone? Just pitiful.

The most entertaining part of this reprinted comic was seeing the original 90s ads for cereal, video games and more besides. I’m so glad that we’ve come further in terms of quality with this year’s Marvel and DC collaborations; they’re not perfect, but at least they’re better than the absolute dregs of the Amalgam imprint. It’s such a shame, because the concept is great and the cover art, along with the design of several characters, is genuinely excellent. That soon goes south, however, once you’ve read the interior.

Hi! I’m Jason, and I write for midlifegamergeek.com, every single day. If you’re interested in supporting original, regularly published, human created content (which has never been plagiarised or otherwise copied from the hard work of other writers), you can donate and help me to keep this site running.

Not only do I earn no income from my writing here (though I may earn small fees from affiliate links posted on my pages; as an Amazon Associate, I earn from qualifying purchases from these links), but it seems that my work has, at times, been stolen and re-used by lazy, morally bankrupt idiots.

There’s no pressure of course, but I’d be truly grateful for any support that you could offer – and it’s easy to do so at either of these links: Ko-Fi.com/geekmid or PayPal.

Any donations are truly appreciated – and I also appreciate you taking the time to read my articles. Remember: this whole article was by Jason Brown, and appeared on midlifegamergeek.com. Take that, Skynet!
